What are we doing?

Seriously.

We spend our time every summer watching a bunch of airheads living their lives, instead of living our own.

Big Brother 9 has just started on British television and I’m aware that in spite of my determination not to, I normally end up getting sucked into watching.

Well, not this year.

This year, I am going to get off my backside and do something more constructive. Who’s with me?

I am going to set a challenge for myself and anyone else who wants to join in to go and do something that will broaden my mind and my experiences instead of watching Big Brother this year.

I will post the week’s project every Monday and the results at the end of the week. If anyone wants to join in, they can let me know how they got on and I’ll put it up on the blog.

First task goes up on Monday.

;As promised, here’s my first project. We have a ridiculous quantity of Lego in the house. No, really. It’s just gathering dust. I agree that it’s the best toy ever invented. But we don’t have kids - so it never gets used. So the first task is to build something out of all that Lego. [...]ect.

I don’t know quite where this is going, cos I’ve now run out of white and grey bricks (unless I raid the sets of Star Wars Lego that we’ve bagged up and put aside for selling on Ebay). I think it’s looking good, though - kind of traditional. I suspect it’s going to end up pretty avant garde.

3. Would I do it again?

Probably, but I would have to have an actual aim in mind. I quite like the idea in Douglas Coupland’s book Microserfs - The Oop office decorated with Lego sculptures that can be pulled down and put back together whenever. Beautiful!

Here is the finished product. I particularly like the snake and the Manga dudes on the top. I ended up breaking into the Lego sets we were going to sell online. And now everythingY[Xike building things.

2. Did anything surprise me?

Nope. Only that I didn’t realise how much Lego we have in the house. I was surprised how caught up I got in this. I was looking forward to getting home a couple of nights last week, cos I wanted to get more building done. I am actually quite surprised that I got quite inventive with this - in the past, I’ve generally done the same thing over and over - the traditional white house thing.Z^

1. What did I learn?

I should really try to listen to more varied music.

2. Did anything surprise me?

Surprised that I enjoyed listening to Yes.  Seriously – best album of the week (admittedly, there was only 3 in the end…)  I think I might try some more.

3. Would I do it again?

Yes.  I’m going to try and take people up on their recommendations of new music in future and se] night’s album was a bunch of Mozart’s concertos.  I sat and painted while it played and felt very grown up and intellectual. So this week’s activity is to spend at least an hour each evening (when Big Brother is on, naturally…) meditating. I am a Christian and as such will use some meditation exercises with Jesus as my focus. I really hope that I will be able to discern better what God is sa_^[ying to me. I just need a fresh experience of Him.

Again, if anyone else wants to join me, you are very welcome. If you want to come round to the house, please do so. If you’re not a Christian, follow another form of meditation if you want.

I’d be very curious to see what the outcome will be - please let me know.

I’ve also decided to try and read the whole bible.  Never been able to get past Exodus before.

On a vaguely related note, I am now halfway through Numbers. Which is much further than I’ve managed in the past. I’m astounded at some of it – how much points towards Jesus and just how much the Israelites had to do in the desert. I knew that atonement was hard, but the sheer volume of livestock that had to be sacrificed is staggering. Really enjoying it, surprisinglfheeak with ‘the voice’, but the twinky twonky music was sooo bad. They are helpful – but there are so few Christian meditations available online – If anyone knows anywhere else I can get some, I’d be very interested.

Right.

This week’s challenge is to fulfill a promise you’ve made to someone – do something that you told someone you’d do and haven’t actually done yet.  Sound fair?

I am constantly promising people I’ll do things for them and regularly forget all about it.  And when kjaI remember I get all embarrassed and/or ashamed.  And then I just hope that they’ve forgotten too.

1. What did I learn?

I learned that the things I often put off doing are most often the things I enjoy doing.

2. Did anything surprise me?

I was concerned that the painting would just feel like a chore, because I felt kind of compelled to do it.  But when I finally got the time to do it, I got really absorbed.

3. Would I do it again?

I do it fairly regularly anyway.  So yes.

Okay, that was mostly reaching – I didn’t really get any great revelations this week.  Nothing particularly inspiring.

However, I still haven’t watched any Big Brother and am not watching any TV at all at the moment, apart from the news in the morning and Doctor Who (how exciting was Saturday, btw?) and am not missing it in the slightest.  I was starting to become preoccupied with a daft wee computer game, though – I had to stop that.  Week Four pporoject to follow later.
