A starting point for real Labour policies

A new leader gives the opportunity for a fresh start for any political party. Now is the time for a fresh start within the Labou party, so here are five things which Gordon Brown should do as leader of the Labour Party:

1) Abolish all grammar schools, turning instead to provide a world-class, comprehensive education for all;

Gordon’s Dilemma

For quite a while now, we’ve been in a will-he?-won’t-he?- situation in British Politics. Gordon Brown keeps us guessing. Just will there be a general election before Christmas, or not? To me, the answer to this question should be decided by one, rather simple, criteria - do we need an election?

If you want to stop reading now, then the answer is “no”, we don’t need an election. There is no good F

Let’s put an end to selection - maybe

Over the last couple of weeks, grammar schools and selection have been at the fore of political debate. David Willetts announced that the Conservative Party was no longer going to commit itself to opening any more grammar schools, but not shut existing grammar schools down. In the Deputy Leadership race, on the other, some candidates, such as Hilary Benn and Peter Hain, along with Gordon Brown, have countered caet round to doing all the things that I’ve meant to for a while.

Well, one of those things has finally been finished, forty-eight hours after started, and not enough sunlight in the middle! I present to you… my new quiz section, and the first quiz I’ve made and put up is a superheroes quiz. Do take a look and fill it in. It’s still requiring a lit

Another Step Out+ video special

You’ve seen Jesus Superhero, which, so it seems from the comments, in blasphemous. Now I present to you another B.U.S.Y. Step Out+ special, You Are G.O.D. Yet more amusing video for your enjoyment. Not quite up to Doug Horley’s standard, but I’ll get there one day…

It goes without saying, of course, that the other four were superb!

In the Deputy Leadership race, on the other, some candidates, such as Hilary Benn and Peter Hain, along with Gordon Brown, have countered cakls and selection. Stay tuned for part two: my vision of how our education system should be constructed.

hey would themselves like to see thewm shut down. I, on the other hand, have kept my mouth shut - probably a wise thing.

However, there is a time for everything (so says Ecclesiastes 3), and now is the time for me to speak on this issue. I will actually deal with this in two sections: firstly, looking at the Conservative and Labour positions on grammar schools and selec e same: they oppose grammar schools, but won’t shut them. Why? Because they fear they will lose an election is they shut grammar schools. Why, but that’s sensible! On the contrary, it shows they do not believe they can win an argument on whether we should have grammar schools or not. For a government which prides itself in making tough choices and changing the political landascape, that is a telling lack of boldness.

Thus, this concludes part one on grammar schoo !rs, in fact. However, they still haven’t shut grammar schools down, or turned them into comprehensives. No, instead they have followed a policy of specialist schools which means choosing whether to send your child to a school which invests heavily in mathematics, or one that emphasises science. This is not my main bones, however. Nor is my main bone the city academies which are designed to boost results in areas where attainment is low. No, the problem for Labour is almost th!" hink that the Conservatives would support shutting down existing grammar schools and replacing them with academies - but no, only new schools should be academies. Existing grammar schools should stay as grammar schools, even though they reinforce social inequalities. How principled. Perhaps, coming from an Etonian front bench, that’s what you should expect.

Not that Labour’s approach is any better. Labour oppose grammar schools. They have done for a number of yea"#!s who, historically at least, support grammar schools because, looking at results at least, they are successful schools. However, the party apparently now believes that they are bad for social mobility and so new schools should be opened. Instead, city academies should be supported because they are better for social mobility as they select by background rather than ability. What’s the problem with this, then? Well, if grammar schools are bad for social mobility, you’d t#$"tion, and then, in another post later on, I shall deal with my own view of the future of education and selection.

So, on to the the views of the two main parties (or, rather, the leadership’s views in each party, as members may be opposed to the leadership stances of both parties!). Both stances are problematic, as they both say that the leadership think one thing, but not in a principled enough way to boldly follow a radical line.

Firstly, take the Conservative$#lls to close existing grammar schools down by saying that it is not electorally viable to do so, but that they would themselves like to see thewm shut down. I, on the other hand, have kept my mouth shut - probably a wise thing.

However, there is a time for everything (so says Ecclesiastes 3), and now is the time for me to speak on this issue. I will actually deal with this in two sections: firstly, looking at the Conservative and Labour positions on grammar schools and selec%

Be blessed, for this is the only website (for now) where you are able to catch a glimpse the this year’s Step Out+ team in action performing some of this year’s action songs. It’s quite something to see and I recommed a look. You’ve seen it before anyone on the Baptist Union’s website, so it’s an exclusive!

Harriet Harman is a wonderful woman and will, I am sure, do a very good job as deputy leader of the Labour Party. However, it is clear that the left of the Party cannot be ignored any more and I for one will be articulating a much stronger sense of how I want to see Labour policy moving forward after the summer recess.

I did not vote for Blears, Benn or Johnson. Why? Neither of these three have a) articulated a clear way forward in the deputy leadership race; b) demonstrated clear, firm-left principles. In the end, I voted for Cruddas over Harman because he articulated the strongest left-leaning arguments and set much of the tone of the debate. However, I also realised he was unlikely to win (although he did come third), and so gave my secon choice votes t<&

Stirling University, Saturday 2nd June

The BUSY Sports Day 2007 was held at Stirling University yesterday, and Noelinho was there. Here’s a video of the evangelistic talk given by a guy called Brian Lowry at the end of the event, just before the awards ceremony.

The Great Noelinho only competed in one event himself, refereeing in another, but more on that next week!

Having bumped into BigAl early this afternoon, we agreed that both of us needed to post something our blogs today. Thus, here I am holding to my side of the bargain, although, admittedly, without any real content. Instead, I have decided to implement a theme change which has been a long time coming. It has a few bugs to iron out, although they will be seen to in the coming weeks. A Sunday service is in operation until the end @c

Sometimes, something great pops up!

Social networking sites are good up to a point, though I have long been concerned that they can be quite counter-productive for meaningful relationships between people. That aside, there’s a lot they have to offer, and today I found something amazing which I would not have ever come across had it not been for Facebook!

<p>Given the events of the last few months, with the uncertainty of whether an election would be called or not, some people have asked whether we should now introduce fixed-term parliaments. There is even a new <a href=campaign for fixed-term parliaments which is being set up right now. The question is, is this the right thing to do?

However, that help, but that help should be provided within secure institutions, which could be prison, but alsoCDBau checks should solve this problem, it is quite clear that they don’t, and I can see quite clearly why so many men are reluctant to help: our society has become so protective, complain and sue each other that it takes very little to cause a fuss. It can seem at times that the easiest thing to do is blow up a bubble and walk around in that bubble in case someone takes exception to something. Of course, this is not the right thing to do either, but at the end of the day, it isDEC the services their local council can provide. Thus, their local council should be able to make them serve their communities as part of their sentence. That is an appropriate sentence. The test of appropriateness must take priority over the pragmatism of prison places.

Incidentally, I also saw that 13% of men are reluctant to work with children because people may think they are a paedophile. Whilst Criminal Records BureEFD mental health institutions, before they can be allowed to reintegrate within communities.

It is not good enough to say that paedophiles should be given community sentences just because prisons are full. Instead, it is other crimes which should be prioritised for community sentencing, and where such sentencing is far more appropriate. Quite frankly, people who don’t pay their council tax are not a danger to their communities. Noelinho is away

Just in case you have been waiting on every word I have to write, I should tell you that you are sadly to be denied this pleasure for the coming couple of months over the summer as I am away, although I have actually been away for the last month for people who haven’t already realised it. Gordon Brown to force us all out of our houses and vote.

One argument in favour of an election is that it provides legitimacy. In going to the polls, Gordon Brown can, by winning the election, claim that he has a mandate to govern the United Kingdom. There is one simple flaw to this - the leader of the Government is not the person who has the mandate. Instead, it is the governing party. Now is the time for a fresh start within the Labou party, so here are five things which Gordon Brown should do as leader of the Labour Party: 1) Abolish all grammar schools, turning instead to [...] schools, turning instead to provide a world-class, comprehensive education for all;
2) Abolish dental and prescription charges: if other healthcare is worthy to vwr which would be economically beneficial as well as ideologically moral.

I shan’t explain the whys and wherefores now, I shall do that later. However, feel free to suggest other things that Gordon Brown should do.

A council has admitted failing children who were sexually abused by a foster couple in Yorkshire.

An independent inquiry was launched after Ian Wathey and Craig Faunch, from Pontefract, were jailed in June for a catalogue of sex offences against boys.

The inquiry’s report said Wakefield Council staff failed to act on suspicions for fear of being seen to be discriminatoryypv) represent parties, and the largest of these parties has a mandate to govern. If the Prime Minister changes, then as long as the new Prime Minister is from the same party, they have the same mandate. Besides, if you are arguing for an election on these grounds, it should have been called long ago.

The second argument in favour is that Labour are well ahead in the polls and so should take advantage of this fact. This is problematic, for a number of reasons. To boil this down jisto professional judgement is awful. It should boil down to love and care. None of the people who allowed this to go on should still be in their jobs.
