content 'Bonjour! And welcome to my first post from the piste here in La Plagne, France. It’s taken a while to sort out some internet access as the hotel im working in has only just now got a pc with wi-fi installed, it is however very expensive at 15 euros for 2 hours!!! and we can’t [...]17;t even get a staff discount on net access!! So unless we can find a work around, updates may be few and far between.

So, here’s the skinny on how things are in the Alps… >

The Alps Rule!!

Nuff said.

P.S. Photos and emails will all follow shortly - I’ve not forgotten about you’s…….yet!

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a very happy new year!!!!

ave everyone a chance to get to know each other and it was something we could all bitch and moan about together which helped us all bond. As soon as we got here we moved in to our accommodation which is a not bad sized room (with a tiny kitchen in and start having some real fun on the piste! Gonna get some proper lessons though and play it a bit safer this time round!

Other than all that everything has been going really great and I’m havin’ a ball. My work shifts are pretty sweet, I’ve been in the pub almost every night, and weirdly I find I can now drink pints of beer and keep pace with the rest of the guys! And I’ve only had one hangover since I got here! It must be the high altitude!

Speaking of which, unfortunately all the staff here have been unable to hire snowboard equipment from the local hire shop as there is limited availability during the peak season, but we have all been given free hire of ski’s and ski boots for the time being. So even though I’m only really interested in snowboarding I decided to give skiing a go. And I gotta tell ya, it was surprisingly good fook all nice and fancy. That’s the only time when it starts to feel like Hell’s kitchen but thankfully Gordon Ramsay has yet to rear his foul-mouthed head.

As for the snow, well lets just say there is loads of the stuff! There was a big snowfall the night before we arrived in the resort so the place looked amazing on the drive up the mountain. However there hasn’t been a significant snowfall since we got here on the 9th December and most of the snow on thsome hilarious banter between all the chefs. Neil the head chef is the soundest guy you could work under and as a result the atmosphere in the kitchen is a really relaxed, friendly and funny one.
I’m mostly doing the basic stuff like chopping vegetables and making salad dressings which is fine by me. It does get pretty busy in the evenings when dinner is being served and all the table orders start coming in and we have to start putting food onto plates and making it l good folk and we’re all getting on great with each other. It’s just like we’re all on holiday together. There’s a really good mix - I thought it would be all English people but there’s some from Wales and Ireland and there must be about 6 Scots here too which is great - I don’t have to keep repeating myself to them when I talk!

Working in the kitchen is good fun and really interesting, there is some seriously good food being cooked and it!) but I am sharing with two other guys so it does get pretty messy really quickly. In fact there’s not much of the floor visible at the moment! Im in the bottom bunk, Jon the barman is in the top bunk and “G” got the double bed. He’s got a funny welsh name so everyone just calls him G - there are lot’s of people asking him “What up G?” Both the guys are pretty sound, infact everybody I’m working with in the hotel are all really;.

Basically, in a word things are GREAT! I’m so glad I decided to come out here and work a winter ski season. The coach journey over here was sheer hell and it took us about 20 hours in total to get to the resort but it gave everyone a chance to get to know each other and it was something we could all bitch and moan about together which helped us all bond. As soon as we got here we moved in to our accommodation which is a not bad sized room (with a tiny kitchen in ?Ok folks here’s what you’ve all been waiting with bated breath for……some photos of my exploits in the Alps!  I’ve uploaded a load more photos over on my Bebo site for you all to check out and I’ve put a few choice pics here to give you a taster of what’s over on Bebo (I [...]ow you’re all secretly afraid of leaving the safety of the jedimoose world and need some incentive to venture out onto the rest of the web!)

Bonjour, cava?

Just a wee post to say hello before we reach the end of 2006.  I hope you have all had a pleasant and interesting year, I know I have.  It’s been a year full of change for myself.  A change in my circumstances, but more importantly a change in the way I look at the world and how I think about life.  I’ve tried to stop always thinking
about where I want to be and feeling down because I’m not there, and instead concentrating more o1;4he time going down the slope on my heel edge and I can only turn right (a bit like Derek Zoolander) but the rest will come with time, i.e when  I finally get the balls to go onto my toe edge and do some proper turns without worrying about falling on my face and sliding down the mountain!

Anyway, Monday was so much fun that I also went out on Tuesday, again with a bunch of the nannies who are  a good laugh and are at a similar skill level to myself (well almost - some are m2A<ighing - I actually got to ride in a bobsleigh!  Last week I got awarded employee of the week at the hotel and as such was given the option of an extra day off or a free ride on the bobsleigh.  It wasn’t much of a choice to be honest: lay in bed for an extra day or go for the ride of your life? Nuff said.

By the way this is not some imitation fair ground ride I’m talking about here, this is a real life size bobsleigh course used for Olympic races and stuff.  N3A

Hi folks,

Firstly a quick mention to everyone about my new website over at bebo.com.  It’s just like a Myspace site, a friend of mine over here introduced it to me and I found it a bit more appealing than Myspace.  Anyway, I’ll mostly be using it to host all my photos on, while keeping this site going as my main blog space (I just can’t abandon all you fellow jedimoosers - you’d be lost without me!).  There’s a link to my bebo page just to415uch better).  So after about 4 weeks of just working, going to the pub and generally lazing about I do 2 days of snowboarding and find myself completely exhausted, muscles aching and coming down with a bit of a cold (again).  By the end of Tuesday night I’m feeling pretty under the weather and one of my eyes is giving me some serious irritation.  By the next morning I wake up in a heck of a state and with what I later find out to be an eye infection giving me perpetual tea546rs running down my face!  So, after a day off work spent laying in bed and a treatment of eye drops the infection starts to heal quite nicely, however, my “bit of a cold” has now developed into a case of tonsillitis!  Swallowing is very painful, I’m reduced to eating soup and nothing but soup and talking is quite a sore and comical experience (for those around me anyway).

So, while being in the Alps has many good points to it (looks like a winter wonderla657nd everyday!) there are obviously some bad ones too.  Due to the weather conditions, regular heavy drinking and late nights, the moment you start to feel a little ill you’re immune system gives up and you begin picking up all sorts of different illnesses at the same time.  I suppose not sticking to my 5 a day isn’t helping either!.  Oh well, at least I’m not alone, you should see the state of some of the other hotel workers.  Poor B@#$%*d’s!  Ha!

C ya!

ng down the slope on my heel edge and I can only turn right (a bit like Derek Zoolander) but the rest will come with time, i.e when  I finally get the balls to go onto my toe edge and do some proper turns without worrying about falling on my face and sliding down the mountain!

Anyway, Monday was so much fun that I also went out on Tuesday, again with a bunch of the nannies who are  a good laugh and are at a similar skill level to myself (well almost - some are m8HWell it took a while but I finally managed to hire myself a snowboard and get some piste time.  Monday lunchtime saw myself and Vicky (one of the hotel nannies) venture out and try some of the easier slopes on offer here.   We’re both beginners and didn’t really fancy throwing ourselves down any black runs [...]st yet.  The session went really well and even though I fell over more times than I can count I had a really good time.   Ok I  might have spent most of t9:Hon my board instead of worrying about falling over - the helmet I bought has also helped there and was well worth the money.  I’ll get some photos up soon of me & all my kit and my board!

But now I’m off to go try jumping off some kickers & maybe pull a few tricks while I’m at it.  Ha!

n waxed & serviced too. Sweet!
So I’ve been out on this board a few times trying to get to grips with the slopes. I mastered going down slop:9y the end of the session I was going down slopes that I previously would have avoided like the plague.

I had a huge smile on my face all the way home and finally felt like a proper snowboarder - even the bruises on my backside couldn’t put me down!  Well I’ve been out on the slopes every day since then and I’m making some real progress, my confidence level while on my board is way up and I feel way more relaxed, basically I’m having so much more fun ;1

Well it took a while but I finally managed to hire myself a snowboard and get some piste time.  Monday lunchtime saw myself and Vicky (one of the hotel nannies) venture out and try some of the easier slopes on offer here.   We’re both beginners and didn’t really fancy throwing ourselves down any black runs just yet.  The session went really well and even though I fell over more times than I can count I had a really good time.   Ok I  might have spent most of t<2=eedless to say I was a bit nervous when I got there and was waiting to get strapped into the bobsleigh, watching others being pushed off down the run and around the first corner.  Basically, you put a crash helmet on, then you get strapped into a four man bobsleigh and they give you a wee push off and you slowly build up speed until you are racing at about 80km/h round the track.  Its a modified bobsleigh that’s been designed to be flexible and absorb impacts better so as n=<>ot to slow it down when it bangs against the side of the track - which happens a lot as there’s no steering mechanism and no driver - they just push you off and away you go!

I gotta tell you, I’ve never had such a rush before in my life!  Once you pass the first easy corner you really start to pick up speed then suddenly you’re being jolted from left to right as you get thrown round the bends at full speed with the bobsleigh climbing up the walls at the si>=?de.  There were some serious G-forces being pulled round those corners and I could feel my whole body, even my head, being pulled down into the bobsleigh.  Now I know a little of what air force pilots experience as they tear up the skies.  There were two hand straps inside the bobsleigh and I was holding onto them for dear life - talk about white knuckle rides!  I was really sucking it up and kept screaming & shouting as we went round the corners - Yeehaa!  Unfortunately ?>the whole thing was over in about 60 seconds but it was one of the best 60 seconds of my life!  It was definitely on a par with the parachute jump I did, not quite as scary but soooooo enjoyable!  And to make things even better, one of the Crystal reps was handing out tokens for a free pint at the bobsleigh cafe afterwards.  It doesn’t get much better than that - free bobsleigh ride and a pint to top it off.  Get in!

yesterday I got a very intimate insight into bobsle@7Hi folks, Firstly a quick mention to everyone about my new website over at bebo.com.  It’s just like a Myspace site, a friend of mine over here introduced it to me and I found it a bit more appealing than Myspace.  Anyway, I’ll mostly be using it to host all my photos on, while keeping this [...]this site going as my main blog space (I just can’t abandon all you fellow jedimoosers - you’d be lost without me!).  There’s a link to my bebo page just toA32 the right, there’s only a few photos up at the moment but more to follow shortly, feel free to leave comments there if you wish, or why not have a go at the quiz - “How well do you know the PowderSnake?”

Now, onto something completely different.  Have you ever seen the film Cool Runnings?  Gotta be one of the funniest films ever while also giving you a good insight into the world of bobsleighing.  Well yesterday I got a very intimate insight into bobsleB%That’s right, it’s official, I am now a fully fledged snowboarder! And about time too! A couple of weeks ago I bought my first snowboard after deciding it was too much hassle hiring a free one for the day. I bought it second hand from the maintenance man in the hotel, Tom [...]n experienced boarder himself). It is well used and has many marks and scratches on it but that’s only cosmetic - the actual board performs brilliantly. It’s a Burton 7. wfw_commentrssstringhttp://switch180.jedimoose.org/?p=4 comments type:ounds easy doesn’t it?  Well after a few false starts and a couple of falls (I really have to force myself to lean forward when going down a slope) it started to feel quite natural and I was soon linking my turns all along the piste.  Obviously having Wee-man looking at me and shouting TURN! until I actually did was a big incentive.  Over the next hour and a half we went on various different runs, each one getting steeper each time - just to make things interesting - and blly he went easy on me and didn’t take me on any runs that were above my level (yet).  Basically, after watching me on the slopes for a minute he pointed out some basic points I had to improve - bend my knees more, relax & lean forward.  Then came the instruction on how to turn onto your toe edge; put your arms out and turn your shoulders in the direction you want to go and just lean forward and into the turn, remembering to keep looking up at where you want to go.  S four days ago I decided there was no way I was going to be able to teach myself and just “pick it up”, so I swallowed my pride and asked one of the KP’s in our kitchen to come out with me and give me some pointers.  Now Neil or Wee-man as he is known - a young guy & fellow Scot from Aberdeen - can REALLY board.  He is very confident on the slopes and likes to go VERY fast.  So I immediately felt the pressure the moment we set off on the slope, but thankfues on my back edge, which is how most people start off and is considered quite easy.  But I was having serious trouble moving on from that to the next stage which is riding on your toe edge of the board and then putting in some turns.  I went out a few times, once with some work friends and also on my own, but no matter what I did I just kept catching one of my edges on the slope and falling over, hard!  Needless to say I was beginning to get put off a bit.

However, abouton are one of the best names in snowboarding gear and according to many people, more knowledgeable than me, that I work beside, this board is one of the best and is used by many a pro boarder (which makes me wonder what I’m doing with it!) Anyway, I got it for an absolute bargain, it came with bindings on it and had been waxed & serviced too. Sweet!
So I’ve been out on this board a few times trying to get to grips with the slopes. I mastered going down slop

That’s right, it’s official, I am now a fully fledged snowboarder! And about time too! A couple of weeks ago I bought my first snowboard after deciding it was too much hassle hiring a free one for the day. I bought it second hand from the maintenance man in the hotel, Tom (an experienced boarder himself). It is well used and has many marks and scratches on it but that’s only cosmetic - the actual board performs brilliantly. It’s a Burton 7.
